Description
The vinometer is a simple glass measuring tool used to estimate the alcohol percentage in finished wine, reading from 0–25% alcohol by volume (% v/v).
Designed specifically for wine only (not beer or spirits), the vinometer works by measuring the flow characteristics of wine through a fine capillary tube. To use, a small amount of finished wine is poured into the reservoir until liquid exits the opposite end. The vinometer is then inverted and placed reservoir-side down on a flat surface to drain. The alcohol level is read at the top of the liquid column on the graduated scale.
This tool is best used on clear, dry wines with no residual sugar, as sugar and carbonation can affect accuracy. A vinometer is a great quick-reference tool for home winemakers looking to estimate final alcohol content without lab equipment.
