Salmon are a keystone species on Vancouver Island and in British Columbia. During the annual salmon run throughout the autumn months, determined salmon migrate from ocean to river and face the challenge of a lifetime to get back to their natal spawning ground. For those that don’t make it or after spawning, salmon carcasses deteriorate and transfer nutrients from the ocean environment to the forest environment.
